On this day, April 17th, in 1999, the talented running back Ricky Williams was drafted into the NFL. Williams was selected fifth overall by the New Orleans Saints and would go on to have a successful career in the league.
In his college career at the University of Texas, Williams set numerous records and was a two-time All-American. He also won the Heisman Trophy in 1998, which is awarded to the most outstanding player in college football.
Williams’ NFL career began with the Saints, where he played for three seasons before being traded to the Miami Dolphins. In 2002, he set a franchise record for rushing yards in a single season with 1,853. Williams also led the league in rushing that year, earning him the NFL rushing title.
Despite some setbacks, including a suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, Williams remained a highly respected player in the NFL. He retired from the league in 2011 with 10,009 career rushing yards and 66 rushing touchdowns.
